Faith On The Go
I sometimes wonder how the Founding Fathers would have their minds blown if they could’ve looked into the future to see modern technology at work. Transportation, military, and personal communication have been in many respects completely revolutionized —the idea of what is possible has radically changed!
It is tempting, in light of such changes, to make pivotal assumptions and come to conclusions about who we are and what we need based on such things. But the reality is, as great as those advancements have been, they are all “superficial” to who we are in the depths of our souls. They are an extension of human thought as we work out what it means to be made in the image of God. To be a “sub-creator”, creating, making, imagining and doing because we are reflecting the God Who made us, Who made all things, and Who loves to make and make new.
The truth is, at our core, interstates, ICBMs, and the internet don’t change our basic needs, nor do they alter the fabric of what it means to be human and to live in a fallen but precious world. To be sure, these things greatly impact us. We live at a speed and with a succession of demands upon our time and an often-obsessive connection to the clock that our forefathers would’ve shrunk from. That isn’t to say it’s all bad—it’s at least just different, with different challenges and opportunities. The challenges are hard, but the opportunities for the average man could be greater and farther reaching in a shorter period of time than ever before.
The information age has certainly challenged our faith. By the blessing of God, great pastors, teachers, theologians, apologists, scientists and others have followed in the wake of men and women like Francis & Edith Schaeffer and have answered the call to equip the saints with the ability to give a reason for the faith that is inside them (1 Peter 3:15). As believers, we also have so much incredible information at our fingertips thanks to technological advancements. Technology is a tool that reflects the order, logic and beauty of God. Like any tool, it can be used to maximize God’s glory and our good or it can be used to destroy and hurt.
It is my prayer that the Lord will use this area of the blog — Faith On The Go — to help equip busy moms and dads, teenagers, young people and even children to feed and fuel their souls, minds and hearts in creative, sustainable, technologically rich and even simple and home-beautifying ways. My hope is that we will, in the 21st century, yet fulfill these precious verses penned so long ago from Deuteronomy 6.
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.”
